As a group we got to learn basic weaving techniques using yarn and wool, while incorporating local plant fibers from plants found in South Florida and the Caribbean. Participants will build a simple and accessible weaving loom utilizing recycled and foraged materials like cardboard and branches.
Aworkshop we did with O,Miami in Spanish. A soup itself is poetry, a way of reminding ourselves that we are interdependent and that we must pass on generationally the knowledge of sowing, preparing, and sharing our food. In this workshop participants created a collective poem while we cooked a soup together. We shared recipes that we have learned from our loved ones. We highlighted the cultural importance of repairing the current relationship with the food we eat. A farm provided us with ingredients and informed participants about how they can support local agroecological projects.
Community Sancocho at Earth n Us. This event was part of the Buenezas - Little Haiti Guide. We cooked together our own version of this famous soup, utilizing vegetables that easily grow in South Florida and we focused on learning about weeds (buenezas) like Spanish Needle, Amaranth, Poor mans pepper, etc.
We learnt how to make botanical inks from plants, tree barks and flowers that grow in South Florida. Using very easy and accessible techniques we extracted unique and living colors. As a group we were shared stories, memories, anecdotes and our relationship to the plants that inspired our painting exercise.
Plant walk and herbal medicine making at Finca Morada. We prepared a compost tea for the soil utilizing local weeds (buenezas) and learned how to make an herbal syrup using tropical plants.
Urban plant walk. We identified different plants growing around North Miami, highlighting their importance to the ecosystems and ways we can learn from them.
Medicinal herbal syrup making at Vizcaya. This class was part of Thoughtful Thursdays program offered by Sheila Gutierrez and Vizcaya.
Fabric dye workshop at Finca Morada. We learnt about turmeric and achiote, how to grow the plants and tie dye techniques we applied to used clothes we wanted to give a second life.
